It was inevitable really. Food blogger meets master brewer-in-training and the result had to be either a food and beer pairing or even better, beer *in* the food. Don't think I missed those ears perking up there at the back... So far I've added beer to pasta, chocolate cake, mussels, an Irish coddle and now, soup.

It was this post that set me off about a year ago. Those beautifully crisp apple slices were the thing that grabbed my attention, and then of course reading through the ingredient list piqued my interest even further. Apples in soup? Hmmmm. Yep, that Nina sure knows how to make the little people (that'd be me) sit up and take notice.

We often don't even realise we live in paradise, do we? Not to blow my own horn (we've had enough of that during the World Cup, right?), but us South Africans are a damn lucky bunch when it comes to food. Sure, it's a tad difficult to track down tofu (nevermind different types of tofu), and I've given up looking for plantains, but we're actually blessed with a wide variety of fabulous fruits and veggies all year round. Sure I might not stumble upon fresh berries as often as I'd like, but when it comes to the more exotic fruits, we can pick and choose to our hearts content - passionfruit (we call 'em grenadillas), pineapple, plums, mangoes, papayas and litchis are all par for the course.

As someone so eloquently put it "Stellenbosch has decided to receive its annual rainfall in one evening." Spring is most definitely *not* in the air at the moment, despite the colourful blooms adorning the leaf-filled trees and the intoxicating smell of jasmine in the air.

What do you get if you mix winter comfort with Southwestern charm? A creamy, spicy corn soup. Perfect for the split personality weather we are experiencing in the Southern Hemisphere at the moment. Mild one day, freezing the next! But you'll have to hop on over to Polkadot Cupcake Cooks (where I'm guest posting today) for the full post and recipe.
PS: Remember to cast your votes for me in the SA Blog Awards and the Fairview Camembert Promo (saving the best for last with #12). Your country uh...

Sometimes recipes can be intimidating. I get it. No really, I do. But fortunately Nina at My Easy Cooking always steps up to the plate, inspiring us mere mortals with her easy-to-make-at-home recipes. And not only are they a cinch to make, I'm sure they taste just as mouthwateringly good as her spectacular photos make them look. Nina - you inspire me!

I suppose that when you get bogged down by the first sniffles of the season, you know well and truly that winter has arrived. Not that it was a big consolation for me when I had to take not just one, but two days off work last week. And while days off work are great, it's not so great when you are forced to take it easy at home. And made to wrap up snugly in bed.

It is freezing in the Western Cape at the moment. Yes, I know I proclaimed my love for winter just the other day, but it would be nice if the temperature could be dialed up to juuuust a notch above freezing. Just saying.
This month Joanne from Eats Well with Others chose Vietnam as the theme for the Regional Recipes event and when I saw that I did a silent "hell yeah!" in my head. Because you see, I love asian food. Chinese take out (the greasier the better), all-you-can-eat buffets and tempting noodle-y dishes at our local Thai place, you name it, and I'll probably like it. Sad thing though: I tend to not cook a lot of asian food at home. Yes I do the odd stirfry, but that's where it stays. Mostly.

Wait a minute! Didn't I just post an Indian Carrot Soup recipe a few days ago? Yup, guilty as charged. You don't even need to bring the warrant of arrest, just show me the handcuffs and I'll step forward willingly to accept my fate.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Well, life (or in this case, my mother-in-law) didn't hand me lemons, but three bags of carrots last week. What's a girl to do?

I've been feeling a bit under the weather for the last few days. It started with a scratchy throat on the weekend and progressed into some minor sniffles yesterday. Highly annoying as we're just entering spring - colds should be a thing of the past now!

Update: Submitted to Weekend Herb Blogging #199 (hosted by Mele Cotte)
Time to be honest: I'm not a big fan of brothy soups. I prefer my soups thick and smooth. The need for chewing should be minimal. That's not to say I don't like a brothy soup every now and again (can anyone say miso?), but they generally don't form part of my top ten, soup-wise. And apologies to my Eastern European counterparts, but a soup consisting of cabbage and beetroot chunks floating in a thin broth really didn't sound too appealing.

I really like the Taste.com site - they have some amazing recipes on there, you can search by different criteria and the ingredients are usually easy to find. OH! And they promote winter recipes in our winter, unlike the other (mostly American) sites out there who live on the opposite hemisphere and leave me wanting with all their fresh salads in our coldest months.

I've been looking at green monster recipes online recently (like this one), and was inspired by their bright green fresh look to create something similar. Unfortunately, it's not really smoothie weather here (and besides, the idea of spinach in a smoothie is still a little bit weird for me...), so I thought that a vibrant green soup would be the next best thing. And perfect for the drizzly grey day we had yesterday.

I actually bought the beetroot to roast in the oven, along with some other winter vegetables, but it was such a miserable day that I decided that soup would be the only thing that could sufficiently warm us up.

With autumn kicking into gear, it was time for the first soup of the season and I decided that a creamy potato soup was in order. However, wanting to spice it up a bit, I changed a few details: substituting the potato for sweet potato, adding some aragula and as an afterthought, some mustard. I know, I know, sounds a bit unorthodox, but trust me - the mustard and aragula makes this spectacular.
